Outdoor Skating at Market Square

LOVE Ice Skating, but not the crowds at the local arenas' public skates?  Market Square has the solution!  The outdoor skating rink on the boardwalk is ready.  So come down, strap on your blades and enjoy some fresh air and exercise.  Helmets encouraged!  Please NO hockey sticks.  


The quality of the outdoor skating rinks are extremely dependant on the weather. Please check with our administration offices at 658.3600 for up-to-date ice conditions.

So You Think You Can Dance? Saint John

Grand Finale - February 21


We are looking for Saint John's favorite dancer! Is it YOU?
Market Square and 97.3 The Wave are bringing you the perfect way to fight the winter blues. "So You Think You Can Dance? Saint John" is a dance competition where the City's favourite dancer will be chosen in three age groups; (11-13) (14-17) and (18 +).  

Auditions have already taken place and 25 dancers have been chosen to compete each week to go on to the next round.
Join us each Sunday and cheer for your favorite dancer! During our Grand Finale on Sunday, February 21st, our winners will be announced!

Every Monday 97.3 The Wave will announce the dancers that will be moving on to the next Sunday and each week there will be special showcase performances from a local dance group.

Prizes and Categories:
Categories are (11 to 13 years) (14 to 17 years) (18 years and up)
The winner in each age division will take home a full paid tuition (maximum $500) for one year at the local dance school of their choice. In addition, divisions 11-13 & 14-17 will receive $500 cash and a $200 shopping spree from Body Expressions Dancewear and division 18 + will receive $1000 cash and a $200 shopping spree from Body Expressions Dancewear.

(2010 is The International Year of Biodiversity-UN)
Discover a remarkable world in one square metre of your own backyard! Have fun observing, listing, drawing, or photographing and identifying any plants or animals that may show themselves in your space during this cold winter weekend.  Keep your eyes open!  How many creatures and plants call your backyard home this weekend?  You can use a nearby nature park too!   Bring your written lists and photos to the New Brunswick Museum’s Discovery Gallery to share with museum staff and friends.  We’ll display your photographs.

February 14, Sunday, 1:30-2:30 pm – Poetry for Lovers and Strangers, by Clyde A. Wray
Enjoy poetry by Clyde A. Wray, Interpretive Dance by Kelli Wray, and a hot cup of tea!  Singles and couples are welcome for this Valentines Day hour of pampering. Mr. Wray is the author of four books of poetry.  His latest work published by DreamCatcher Publishing is titled Bridges We Can Walk Across. Mr. Wray won the CBC poetry face off in 2008.  He is also a performer, director and playwright with recent plays at the Imperial Theatre. All are welcome. Free.

Embark on a mission to discover the secrets of meteorites with the new travelling exhibition Riding with Meteorites. Free during February. Open Monday, March 1, 9am-5pm.

 

NEW TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS:

Pentegoet Park: The Terrible Ones by Goody-B Wiseman
January 13 to February 24, 2010
This multimedia installation documents the lives of a fictitious group of feral children who escape from captivity and create a colony of their own. Elements of Pentegoet Park will also be displayed in Third Space’s ATM window space on 40 Charlotte Street.
THIRD SPACE GALLERY AT THE NBM - As part of the Passages + Prototypes exhibition series, Third Space Gallery is partnering with the NBM to produce a series of sculptural and multimedia installations.  The series is being supported with financial assistance from The Canada Council for the Arts.

Building New Brunswick
January 23 – May 24, 2010
Explore the development of architecture in New Brunswick beginning with structures built by the First Nations before European contact; buildings of the French and English colonial periods; and contemporary works from the present. Produced by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and circulated by the New Brunswick Museum, in collaboration with architect and author John Leroux. Accompanying publication Building New Brunswick published by Goose Lane available from the Museum Shop.

Riding with Meteorites 
January 30 – April 25, 2010
Ready for take-off? Embark on a mission to discover the secrets of meteorites with a voyage through outer space, and encounter celestial objects that risk crashing into Earth. Enjoy interactive games; visit the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter; see real meteor showers; examine some meteorites from the Moon, Mars and elsewhere in our solar system that are some of the rarest in the world. Produced by the Musée minéralogique et minier de Thetford Mines, and  Musée de la nature et des sciences. Presentation of this travelling exhibition was made possible by a subsidy from the Museums Assistance Program offered by the Department of Canadian Heritage.
